How to Solve Angle Eye Headlight Fault in BMW 420
The BMW 4 Series lineup and all BMW cars, in general, are known for their aggressive styling, sporty design and killer looks. That’s why most car enthusiasts appreciate the visual beauty of the BMW range.
Even those who are perhaps not the biggest fans of BMW can still recognise great design when they see it. The BMW 4 series is one such example. The vehicle has excited fans and frustrated classic design pundits with the introduction of the second generation and its unique BMW design language.
The new model has brought quite a few changes like the new oversized kidney grille, but some things haven’t changed too much. The angel eye accent lights that BMW is known for have been carried over to the new model. These lights are pretty much BMW’s nighttime signature.
Those who have seen a BMW at night know how iconic those accent lights are to the brand. They do the same job as the kidney grille – effectively differentiating a BMW from the rest of the vehicles on the road.
Such a unique feature should be cherished and celebrated – particularly as it’s one that keeps you safe on the road.
As such, If anything goes wrong with the iconic BMW angel eye lights, it needs resolving straight away.
Luckily, one of our clients who owns a 2015 BMW 420 understood the importance of the lights and brought their car over to South Coast Garage at the first sign of trouble.
The client’s vehicle had developed an issue in the right-side angel eye headlight and as a result, it had stopped working. Our lead BMW technician listened to the client’s complaints and at the same time, he started to paint a picture in his mind to help with the repair.
Our technician put the client at ease and ensured them of a quick turnaround. Thankfully, the client handed over the keys, put his trust in our BMW specialist and encouraged him to do the job.
Our technician started by performing a visual inspection of the vehicle. Read on to find out more…..
Faults Found
Our lead BMW technician had to make sure there was no issue from the client’s side and so he checked the lights himself. He found out that the right-side light was indeed unfunctional. The opening and closing of the switch also made no changes.
Moreover, the client had already replaced the headlight driver module, thinking that could be the issue. But that was not the case as the issue never went away. The accent light was still not working.
Our technician had to think a bit extra to understand the issue. So, he decided to perform a full-body vehicle scan. Perhaps, some fault codes would help understand the issue.
Our BMW technician did find some error codes pointing toward the right-hand headlight and a fault for the LED unit on the right-hand side.
This meant that he had to initiate South Coast Garage in-depth diagnostic procedure and find the root cause of the problem. There was no way our technician was going to tackle the repair, without his handy 15-step diagnostic procedure.
Diagnostic Procedure
The in-depth diagnostic process is used by all the technicians at South Coast Garage. That’s because the procedure allows our specialists to identify the problem and apply a solution in time. On top of that, the 15-steps ensure we don’t miss a thing during the diagnosis. No issue goes unnoticed, and our technicians hit the spot every time!
Thankfully, our technician also got on that track and started using his knowledge and skills to move the diagnosis in the right direction.
Our BMW technician inspected the bulb, its sockets, ground wire and connector wiring but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. According to the state of these components, the angel eye light should work fine. But that wasn’t happening and on top of that our technician was getting a bit frustrated by the dead end.
He started to recall all his workings on a headlight repair in the past and started to extract some wisdom from there. On top of that, our technician used the AOS online data resource to compare other people’s problems with the case at hand.
His thorough investigation and testing identified that the LED module was faulty, and a quick update or replacement of the module would solve the problem.
Now that our BMW specialist had found out the core issue, he could divert his focus on employing the solution.
Solving The Problem
Our BMW specialist used the ITSA software and AOS to good use and found out the issue behind the 420. The LED module needed replacement, while the rest was perfectly fine.
Our technician performed the repair and checked the angel-eye light. Sure enough, they were working fine and as good as new.
Afterwards, our BMW technician checked the car for fault codes and nothing relevant to the repair turned up. All was good to go and it was time to hand over the car back to the client.
Our technician not only performed his job efficiently, but he did so in the most cost-effective way. As a result, the client got the issues fixed quickly and cost effectively.
