Volkswagen Golf Transmission Fault

A car that won’t change gear properly isn’t something you can put off dealing with.

Our Initial Look at the Volkswagen Golf

When the Volkswagen Golf arrived at South Coast Garage, Eastbourne, our technicians’ first priority was to speak with Mrs E about what she had been experiencing. We asked when the transmission warning had first appeared, how the shifting had changed since, and whether factors like speed, outside temperature, or journey duration seemed to play a part.

Without this early conversation, testing risks being broad and unfocused. Hearing directly from the driver narrows the scope and gives our technicians a much more informed starting point for the evaluation ahead.

Our technicians then took the Golf on a road test to observe the reported symptoms in person. Manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment was connected throughout the drive, capturing serial data from the transmission control module as the vehicle was in motion. This provided a real-time window into how the system was behaving at the precise moments the fault presented.

A full system scan was carried out at the same time, returning a stored fault code with a direct link to the Volkswagen Golf transmission fault:

  • P1736 00 — Position sensor for clutch 2, electrical malfunction. Active.

This confirmed that the transmission control module had registered an electrical fault involving one of the internal sensors used for clutch monitoring. But a credible transmission warning light diagnosis doesn’t stop at the code. What matters is understanding the component-level failure the code is pointing to.

To uncover what the Volkswagen P1736 fault code was telling our technicians, and to confirm the right course of action, a deeper investigation was essential.

What Was Behind the Volkswagen Golf Transmission Fault?

Fault code P1736 had drawn attention to an electrical malfunction with the position sensor for clutch 2. That was a useful starting point, but our technicians needed more before acting. To identify the correct repair for this Volkswagen Golf transmission fault, they had to establish what had gone wrong, where it had gone wrong, and why. A structured diagnostic process was followed, with each area tested in turn to reach a conclusion built on solid evidence.

Step 1: Consulting manufacturer technical data

Our technicians referred to Volkswagen’s technical information service to review the operating design of the transmission fitted to Mrs E’s Golf.

The 2020 Golf was equipped with a seven-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), a dual-clutch transmission used widely across the Golf range. Gear selection and clutch engagement are controlled by a mechatronic unit, which brings together the transmission control unit (TCU) and a hydraulic valve body in a single integrated assembly.

An important point is that clutch position in this transmission is not monitored by a standalone sensor fitted externally. Pressure sensors built into the mechatronic unit generate the feedback the system depends on for clutch control, and clutch position is calculated from those pressure readings. When fault code P1736 references “position sensor for clutch 2,” it is identifying this integrated pressure sensor within the mechatronic unit.

This was a telling detail. It directed our technicians’ attention firmly inside the mechatronic unit, rather than toward any externally mounted component.

Step 2: Checking for technical service bulletins

Our technicians searched for technical service bulletins (TSBs) relevant to the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and the symptoms Mrs E had described.

  • A bulletin was found that addressed the exact fault code and the behaviour being reported
  • It confirmed this as a recognised issue with DQ381 transmissions, linked to progressive deterioration of the integrated pressure sensors inside the mechatronic unit
  • The bulletin outlined that as these sensors drift beyond their calibrated range, the TCU receives unreliable pressure data and miscalculates clutch position, producing erratic gear selection and incorrect clutch control.

This was consistent with what the Volkswagen P1736 fault code had suggested, but hands-on testing was still needed to confirm the fault before the repair could proceed.

Step 3: Serial data analysis at rest

With the vehicle stationary, the engine off, and the ignition on, our technicians measured the pressure values for both clutches using manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment.

  • In a transmission working as it should, both pressure readings should sit as close to 0.00 bar as possible under these conditions
  • The clutch 2 pressure reading was significantly outside the expected range, consistent with a sensor that had drifted well beyond its calibrated tolerance
  • The clutch 1 pressure reading remained within normal limits, confirming the issue was restricted to the clutch 2 circuit

The readings supported the Volkswagen P1736 fault code and reflected exactly what Mrs E had described. The even-numbered gears were the ones being affected, which is precisely what a clutch 2 sensor fault would cause.

Step 4: Visual inspection

Our technicians examined the mechatronic unit’s exterior, wiring harness, and all connectors for visible signs of damage, corrosion, or poor connections.

  • No external issues were discovered, confirming the fault sat within the mechatronic unit itself

The conclusion

The testing had produced a clear outcome. The Volkswagen P1736 fault code traced directly to the integrated pressure sensor for clutch 2, located on the TCU circuit board inside the mechatronic unit. This sensor had drifted out of its operating specification and was no longer providing accurate hydraulic pressure data for the clutch 2 sub-transmission. As a consequence, the TCU was miscalculating clutch position, resulting in incorrect engagement of the even-numbered gears.

Because this sensor forms part of the mechatronic assembly, it cannot be sourced or replaced individually. The mechatronic unit needed to be replaced as a complete unit.

How the Mechatronic Unit Was Replaced

Our technicians explained the full findings to Mrs E and set out the repair that was required. She was happy to proceed, and the work got underway immediately.

  • Transmission oil was drained and the mechatronic unit accessed by removing the transmission oil pan and associated components
  • The faulty mechatronic unit was carefully disconnected and taken out of the transmission
  • The replacement unit was installed, with every electrical connection, mounting point, and seal inspected to confirm correct and secure fitment
  • Fresh transmission oil was added to the correct Volkswagen specification, following manufacturer procedure

Calibration and adaptation

  • A calibration and adaptation procedure was performed using manufacturer-level diagnostic software. Following mechatronic replacement, this step is essential as it allows the new TCU to adapt its operation to the existing wear state of the transmission and clutch components
  • All stored fault codes were cleared

Post-repair road test

  • The Golf was driven on a structured road test, providing the conditions needed for the transmission to carry out its clutch adaptation under real driving
  • Our technicians monitored throughout, confirming that gear changes were smooth, no gears were being missed, and no new fault codes had surfaced
