Range Rover P25A9 Fault

Range Rover P25A9 Fault

An engine management light and an oil system warning. That was what greeted Mr K when he looked at the dashboard of his 2018 Range Rover Velar. There had been no lead-up, no change in performance, and no reason to expect it.

Oil-related warnings appearing without explanation are enough to concern any driver. The Range Rover Velar engine warning lights left Mr K anxious and unsure. What had caused them? Was the vehicle still safe to use? And if he continued driving, could it make the situation worse?

Mr K, from Hailsham, contacted South Coast Garage in Eastbourne after a friend spoke highly of the garage. He wanted the problem properly investigated and a clear answer about what was behind the warnings.

Mr K had the vehicle with us as soon as he could.

Range Rover P25A9 Fault

Establishing the Full Picture Before Testing Began

The priority for our technicians at South Coast Garage, Eastbourne, was to understand what Mr K had experienced. We asked when the warnings had first appeared, whether they had stayed on permanently or come and gone, and whether the vehicle had felt or sounded any different before they showed up.

With that context in hand, our technicians connected dealer-level diagnostic equipment and ran a full system scan. A single stored fault code was identified:

  • P25A9-13: Piston cooling oil control circuit open. The ECM (engine control module) had detected an open circuit within the electrical circuit of the piston cooling oil control valve.

During normal engine operation, the piston cooling oil control valve controls the flow of engine oil to oil jets inside the engine block. These oil jets spray oil onto the underside of the pistons, which helps to control piston temperature. If the valve’s electrical circuit is interrupted, the ECM may not be able to actuate it correctly. Without that control, oil may not reach the piston cooling jets as intended.

This can trigger the engine management light and produce an oil-related warning message, even when the oil level is fine. The warning concerns the engine’s ability to control oil flow to the piston cooling system. It does not necessarily indicate an oil level problem.

With the fault code on record and the symptoms accounted for, our technicians at South Coast Garage began a thorough diagnostic process to confirm the root cause of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.

Narrowing Down the Cause of the Range Rover P25A9 Fault

The fault code gave our technicians a firm foundation for the P25A9 Range Rover diagnostic. It confirmed an open circuit, but where in the circuit that fault was had not yet been identified. The wiring, connector, valve, or another part of the circuit could each have been responsible. Our technicians addressed each one in turn.

Step 1: Manufacturer technical information review

Our technicians consulted the manufacturer’s technical information system before beginning any physical checks. This included known issues, technical service bulletins, recalls, and field remedies relating to the P25A9 fault on the Range Rover Velar.

  • Checking this first means our diagnostic work reflects the latest manufacturer guidance.

Step 2: Wiring harness inspection

A visual inspection of the wiring harness running to the piston cooling oil control valve was carried out. Our technicians checked for physical damage, chafing, corrosion, or any sign of disturbance that could explain the open circuit.

  • The harness was in good order with no visible faults.

Step 3: Connector and terminal pin checks

The electrical connector at the valve was inspected, together with each terminal pin inside it. A corroded, displaced, or poorly seated pin can cause an open circuit condition, even where the wiring itself is undamaged.

  • The connector and terminal pins were in acceptable condition. No corrosion or mechanical faults were found.

Step 4: Oscilloscope testing

Our technicians connected an oscilloscope to evaluate the electrical integrity of the wiring between the engine control module and the piston cooling oil control valve. This revealed how the signal and supply were behaving under live operating conditions, rather than relying on a static resistance check alone.

  • The wiring tested within expected parameters, confirming the circuit between the control module and the valve was intact.

Step 5: Valve activation test

With the wiring, connector, and terminals all cleared of fault, the valve was the logical remaining focus. Our technicians used dealer-level diagnostic software to command the valve to activate and monitored its response.

  • The valve did not respond as it should have. Testing indicated the valve had failed, confirming it as the root cause of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.

Each part of the circuit had been individually tested and cleared. The wiring and connections were all confirmed as sound, and the fault originated within the valve.

The Range Rover Oil Control Valve Replacement Process

The diagnosis was clear. Our team at South Coast Garage contacted Mr K to walk him through what had been found. We explained how the circuit had been tested section by section, why each part had been cleared, and why the piston cooling oil control valve needed replacing. Mr K was happy to go ahead, and our technicians started the repair.

Here’s what the work involved:

  • The failed piston cooling oil control valve was removed from its position in the engine block. The valve sits beneath other engine components, and accessing it required carefully removing surrounding components to avoid disturbing adjacent systems.
  • A new replacement valve was fitted. Correct seating, sealing, and electrical connection were verified before the engine was reassembled.
  • The harness and connector were reconnected to the new component.
  • All stored fault codes were cleared from the engine control module.
  • Post-repair system checks confirmed the replacement valve was responding correctly to the engine control module.
  • A final system scan verified no outstanding fault codes and confirmed the oil-related warning message had cleared.

The Result Following the Piston Cooling Oil Control Valve Replacement

Range Rover P25A9 Fault

Mr K collected his Range Rover Velar from South Coast Garage with a clear dashboard. The engine management light was off, the oil-related warning had gone, and the piston cooling oil control valve failure had been identified, corrected, and verified. The system was operating as it should.

Mr K was happy with the result: a structured investigation that tested each part of the circuit individually, a fault traced to a failed piston cooling oil control valve, and the whole issue put right in one visit. Our team kept Mr K informed at every stage, with straightforward communication throughout.

Rather than face the uncertainty of an undiagnosed fault or the wait and cost of a main dealer visit, Mr K chose South Coast Garage and received a professional diagnosis, a competitive repair cost, and a clear resolution of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.
