A Guide to Audi Diesel AdBlue

Audi has always been at the forefront of innovation, and their early adoption of diesel engines in their executive cars was no exception. These engines quickly gained a reputation for their outstanding performance and unwavering reliability. However, the entire industry faced a significant challenge when it came to emissions, and many brands that heavily relied on diesel fuel in Europe found themselves grappling with this issue. It became evident that emissions concerns were not limited to a few manufacturers, but rather an industry-wide problem that needed to be addressed.

Over a decade ago, Audi introduced AdBlue to certain engine models to reduce the harmful emissions that diesel vehicles produce. AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid made up of urea and deionised water. It’s stored in a separate tank and automatically injected into the exhaust system during operation. The injection of AdBlue is crucial in transforming nitrogen oxide emissions into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

Diesel AdBlue Case Study for Audi A6

One of our clients at South Coast Garage recently reported that their 2016 Audi A6 was producing excessive exhaust emissions. Upon inspection, our Audi specialist discovered that the problem was related to the countdown timer on the AdBlue system.

Our findings are as follows…

These Faults Were Found

Our experienced Audi technician conducted a comprehensive inspection of the client’s Audi A6 to diagnose and resolve the AdBlue issue. Throughout the inspection, the technician identified various clues that would assist in the repair process.

Despite refilling the AdBlue fluid, the dashboard continued to display the countdown timer and AdBlue warning. Our Audi technician suspected a possible problem with the Engine Management System (EMS) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

The client also informed our technician that they had previously taken their vehicle to an Audi dealer. During this visit the dealer recommended a different component as the cause of the problem and performed a software update. Unfortunately, the repair did not fix the issue.

Our client was fortunate to discover South Coast Garage during an online search for an Audi specialist. After reading our customer reviews and blogs, they were convinced that we were the ideal garage to resolve the AdBlue problem with their Audi A6. As it turned out, their instincts were right!

With extensive experience under their belt, our skilled Audi technician confidently tackled the A6 problem to provide a quick fix. After careful inspection, our technician identified that both the Engine Management System (EMS) and the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) were responsible for the problem.

At South Coast Garage, our Audi specialist conducts a thorough 15-step diagnostic assessment to ensure a complete and efficient resolution of any problems. Our skilled technicians are committed to following this process to accurately identify and resolve issues without resorting to guesswork or replacing unnecessary parts. We prioritise delivering exceptional service and value by providing first-time fixes.

The Diagnostic Procedure

As soon as the Audi A6 was entrusted to us, our technician promptly initiated our proven 15-step diagnostic procedure.

During our assessment, we conducted a short test drive to uncover any possible issues with the vehicle. Carrying out test drives is crucial in detecting problems that may not be visible when the vehicle is sitting still. By driving a vehicle, our mechanics can experience how it responds and quickly identify any additional clues that can help them pinpoint the issue.

Our Audi expert at South Coast Garage utilised advanced Audi dealership technology to scan the vehicle for any possible fault codes. As expected, they detected multiple issues related to the SCR system that required further examination.

Before analysing the SCR system, our technician conducted real-time data inspections on both incoming and outgoing signals of the exhaust gas. The incoming signal comes from the engine’s exhaust gas, which contains hazardous pollutants such as nitrogen oxides. Meanwhile, the outgoing signal relates to the treated exhaust gas that has gone through the SCR system. If the system is working correctly, it should remove pollutants by converting them into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

During the inspection, our Audi expert detected a deviation in the signals and opted to examine the maintenance records from the prior garage. This is a simple technique that can sometimes help to speed up the diagnostic procedure, but regrettably, it did not provide any answers in this specific situation.

Our technician proceeded to examine the AdBlue fluid levels, which were found to meet the recommended standards. It was reassuring to confirm that the quality of the fluid was excellent. It is worth noting that some owners may be tempted to opt for lower-quality AdBlue fluid as a cost-saving measure. However, this decision can have detrimental effects on the engine’s long-term health. Thankfully, our client had adhered to the manufacturer’s recommendation and consistently used the appropriate AdBlue fluid for their Audi A6.

So, despite the AdBlue fluid being in excellent condition and the software functioning correctly, the AdBlue issue remained. Recognising the potential for a hardware-related issue, our expert decided to conduct a comprehensive additional inspection.

Upon careful examination of the AdBlue pump, our technician successfully identified the root cause of the problem – the pump was unable to generate sufficient pressure to effectively distribute the AdBlue fluid throughout the system.

With the issue now identified, our technician wasted no time in initiating the necessary repairs to resolve the issue.

Resolving the Issue

Since our Audi expert had been unable to achieve the required pressure from the AdBlue pump the only viable solution was to replace the faulty component with a new one.

Our expert successfully replaced the AdBlue pump in the Audi, refilled the AdBlue liquid, and checked the pressure levels. After conducting a thorough re-test, we found no errors, which indicated that the system was now operating correctly.

The Audi was now ready for our client to collect.

In Summary

Our Audi technician applied their vast knowledge and experience to confidently resolve our client’s issue with their Audi A6 to accurately diagnose the root cause of the AdBlue problem.
